Martin Schulte, Jr. – 8/1/12

Quit pretending; Martin Schulte, Jr.; Beaver County Times; August 1, 2012.  Editor’s notes for previous letters asserted “The writer is a former resident of Midland.”

I critiqued three previous letters from Mr. Schulte (here, here, and here).  In one letter I did not critique [“A ‘remarkably backward’ letter,” 11/28/10 (no longer on the BCT website)], Mr. Schulte described himself as a “liberal.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In response to those defending the voter ID law in Pennsylvania, I must remind you that you are all, in fact, busted.  Mike Turzai, Republican majority leader in the state House, has been recorded saying, ‘Voter ID, which is gonna allow Gov. Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.’”

[RWC] Leftist darling former-President Jimmy Carter supports a photo ID for voting.

Back in 2008, ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), the recipient of in excess of $800,000 from the Obama campaign during the 2008 primary, was under investigation for voter fraud in at least 13 states, by Democrat and Republican officials alike.  This was a recurring problem since at least 2004.  As a result of one scandal after another, ACORN legally ceased to exist, though some of its chapters simply changed names.

“You can all quit pretending there was some compelling interest in voter fraud, which is no more common than being struck by lightning.  If you were genuinely interested in a balanced approach, help voters get IDs instead of sticking them with the chores and fees necessary to get it, in essence establishing a new poll tax.  It would have been better to start sometime other than right before a presidential election.”

[RWC] As for photo ID “in essence establishing a new poll tax,” lefties should be the experts.  After all, the poll tax (a “Jim Crow” law) was how southern Democrats suppressed minority (American Indians, blacks, etc.) and poor-white voters.

“And it would have been prudent not to brag openly about the political advantage sought by and for Republicans as demographic shifts make their base increasingly irrelevant.  That’s really the important part.  If you’re going to disenfranchise voters, best to keep quiet about it.  But Republicans in Pennsylvania couldn’t contain their glee, and so we all know the truth.

“It is up to everyone else in the state to make them pay in November.  Good luck.”

[RWC] Last summer, Rhode Island passed a law requiring a photo ID to vote.  RI voters reliably vote Democrat and Democrats hold overwhelming majorities in both houses of the General Assembly.  The governor is an independent, a former U.S. Senate RINO with high ADA Liberal Quotients.

Even if voter fraud were non-existent, should we wait until it becomes a problem?  At the same time lefties tell us “The right to vote is one of our most important rights,” they tell us we should not ensure only legal voters vote.  Rather than help people get the ID needed to vote, folks like Mr. Schulte would rather do without photo ID.  You can read more on the topic here
