Shell sponsored cleanup, but hurts environment; Kim Shaffer (KS); Beaver County Times; June 28, 2017.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I was pleased to read the article in The Times concerning the Ohio River cleanup.

“My husband was part of the volunteer group.  However, when he agreed to help again this year, he was not aware of the Shell Chemicals Co. involvement.  I am aware the cleanup may have been canceled without a sponsor.  Kudos to Shell.”

[RWC] KS makes it sound like her husband would not have “agreed to help again this year” had he known of Shell’s effort.

“They must have a very savvy public relations department.  I can just imagine them saying, ‘Let’s sponsor this cleanup.  Folks will think we are so ‘green’ and caring.’  They profit from the environmentally unfriendly product they produce then make you think they care where that product ends up.”

[RWC] Last week, Shell held one of their community meetings at the Center Township VFD #1 and I attended.

My big take-away was how much effort Shell is expending trying to make critics like them.  It’s SOP and there’s nothing insincere or wrong with it.  The only “problem” is it doesn’t work, as this letter demonstrates.  One letter-writer once referred to the effort as “token donations.”  Further, Shell can’t keep saying “yes” to everyone without their help eventually being considered an entitlement, not charity.
