Trying to make sense of it all; William P. (Bill) Smith; Beaver County Times; November 8, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Guys, I’m just trying to make sense of the election results, and I need your help.

“As I see it, it’s OK for the vice president of the United States to be a war profiteer, but not a trial lawyer (as Abe Lincoln was).”

[RWC] Mr. Smith should back up his accusations.  In what way is VP Cheney a “war profiteer?”

There’s nothing wrong with being a trial lawyer, and the term “trial lawyer” covers a broad area.  Even John Kerry was a trial lawyer at one time.  To be more specific, John Edwards is a personal injury lawyer.  These are the folks who sue for whiplash, alleged medical malpractice, et cetera.  I could be mistaken, but I don’t believe Abraham Lincoln was a personal injury lawyer.  As with most other professions, there’s nothing wrong with being a personal injury lawyer as long as you’re ethical.

“I also get the impression that it’s OK for me to go out and bash gay people (as long as I use a handgun while doing so) and that, if the gay person I’m bashing also happens to be a Muslim, I get extra points.”

[RWC] Mr. Smith must believe John Kerry won the election.  In President Bush’s America, none of this stuff is OK.
