Hope for the best; Oren M. Spiegler; Beaver County Times; January 7, 2007.

Mr. Spiegler is such a prolific letter writer, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review gave him a little tribute back in 2003.  Google “Oren M. Spiegler” and you’ll get more hits than you know what to do with.  Unfortunately, prolific is not a synonym for competent.  Mr. Spiegler claims to be a Republican.

Rather than do a point-by-point critique, I’ll make only a couple of comments.

In his letter, Mr. Spiegler refers to Messrs. Bill DeWeese (D) and John Perzel (R) as “damaged goods.”  I tend to agree.

At the same time, Mr. Spiegler appears to believe the election of Rep. Dennis O’Brien (R) “means that the voice of the people has been heard and that reform is in the air.”

I have my doubts for two reasons.  First, Mr. DeWeese himself nominated Mr. O’Brien and Mr. Spiegler acknowledged Mr. DeWeese “consistently stuck [his] thumb in the eyes of the public.”  Why should we believe the promotion of Mr. O’Brien by Mr. DeWeese was not another “thumb in the eye?”

Second, Mr. O’Brien voted for the 2005 payjacking.  Doesn’t that make Mr. O’Brien “damaged goods” just like Messrs. DeWeese and Perzel?

While I admittedly know little of Mr. O’Brien other than what I noted above and that he’s a liberal Republican, I don’t know what he has done to earn the belief he’s a “reformer.”
