Jesus’ message has been distorted ; Donald Thomas; Beaver County Times; July 25, 2010.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The prophet Jesus, who inspired the movement called Christianity, never said one word against homosexuality.

“He did, however, speak loudly against religious pride and judgmentalism.

“He actually refused to condemn one accused of a sexual sin - one of the ‘Big Ten,’ and instead took the opportunity to lambaste the religious people who wanted her executed.

“Jesus taught that God is love.  He demanded of his followers a nonjudgmental lifestyle.  In St. Matthew Chapter 7, Jesus actually went so far as to say that anyone who practices judgmentalism will be condemned.

“How sadly ironic that Christian fundamentalists in our society have made his name synonymous with hatred, bigotry, judgment and homophobia.”

[RWC] I normally avoid critiquing religion-themed letters because religion is about faith, not facts.  I’m addressing this letter because I believe it’s not really about religion.

After you endure Mr. Thomas’ creative interpretation of Scripture, you get to his real message in the last sentence.  Whatever his agenda, Mr. Thomas wants us to believe Jesus and Christianity are “synonymous with hatred, bigotry, judgment and homophobia.”  Why?
