Health care a basic right; Ian S. Thompson; Beaver County Times; July 13, 2004.

Mr. Thompson found a new right.  I don't know if the facts cited by Mr. Thompson are correct or not.  I respond to the letter's conclusion below.

"The real answer to this shameful situation lies in a single-payer, universal health-care program that would cover every single American from the cradle to the grave.

"Every other industrialized country in the world has universal health care, and it's long overdue here in the United States.  Health care, including access to mental health services for children, must be seen for what it truly is: a basic human right."

[RWC] If Mr. Thompson weren't a socialist, I'd tell him a little research would show the socialized healthcare he advocates provides far less than he believes and less than we currently enjoy.1  The problem isn't too little government interference in healthcare; the problem is too much interference.  To get healthcare under control, we need to phase out Medicaid, Medicare, and so-called "employer paid" healthcare plans.  Lawsuit abuse reform would also help.  These changes would allow the marketplace to do its job and make quality healthcare more affordable and thus more accessible.
