Our nation deserves better; John M. Tomaszewski; Beaver County Times; September 12, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“It’s unbelievable.

“The Republican Party once again nominated a person, George W. Bush, for the presidency who bragged about being a ‘C’ student in college, who admitted he was an alcoholic and who avoided the draft for Vietnam by using his father’s influence to get into the National Guard in a questionable manner.”

[RWC] I don’t know that President Bush “bragged” about being a ‘C’ student, but he didn’t try to hide it either.

President Bush never “admitted he was an alcoholic.”  This myth is the result of a DUI fine in Maine in 1976.  A lot of us drank a bit more than we should have when we were young but gradually backed off as we grew more “wise.”  This is a far cry from alcoholism.  The coverage I’ve seen indicates Mr. Bush quit drinking altogether in 1986.

I assume the “executing mentally retarded people” comment refers to President Bush’s time as Texas governor.  Governor Bush never executed anyone, retarded or otherwise.

Regarding the National Guard claim, that has been dragged up time after time over the years and debunked.  I believe it’s true a family friend asked for help, but even the guy who allegedly helped Bush get into the National Guard swore under oath in 1999 that no one in the Bush family contacted him.

“Our nation deserves a more qualified and trustworthy person as our president.”

[RWC] Let’s see, George W. Bush was governor of Texas for six years and President of the United States for nearly four years.  What more qualifications does a candidate need?

Why is President Bush not trustworthy?

Mr. Tomaszewski, whom would you recommend?  If you recommend John Kerry, what are his qualifications?  After all, according to Kerry’s biography, he grew up, spent four months in Vietnam, and started running for president last year.  He never mentions his record from the time he left the Naval Reserves to 2003.
