U.N. serves a purpose; John M. Tomaszewski; Beaver County Times; February 16, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The United Nations came into existence in 1945.  Its purpose is to maintain peace and security among its 191 nations.

“In addition, the United Nations’ purpose is to seek international cooperation in solving economic, social and humanitarian problems.

“The United Nations has not stopped all wars or solved all the world’s problems, but it has been the world’s forum in debates on world issues.  The Bush administration went to war in Iraq without the approval of the United Nations.”

[RWC] What good is a world forum when nothing is done?  If Mr. Tomaszewski would read some of the UN Security Council resolutions against Iraq, he would find those resolutions gave members authority to force compliance.

“Now, the administration is seeking U.N. support in training of the Iraqi troops and security forces.

“Let us see the mistake of the pre-emptive war in Iraq.  We should cooperate with the United Nations in dealing with world problems such as the nuclear weapons of North Korea and Iran.”

[RWC] Mr. Tomaszewski sure has selective memory about the UN.  This is the same UN that did nothing while hundreds of thousands were slaughtered in Rwanda, did nothing during the “ethnic cleansing” in Bosnia and Kosovo, is shoulder deep in the “Oil for Food” scandal, and is shoulder deep in the “peacekeeper” sex abuse scandal.  The list goes on and on.

Regarding North Korea and Iran, we’ve been doing exactly as Mr. Tomaszewski recommends and we see where it has gotten everyone.  The UN is good at talking, but real bad at actually accomplishing anything.
