John M. Tomaszewski – 6/29/06

GOP accents the negative; John M. Tomaszewski; Beaver County Times; June 29, 2006.

As in his previous letter, Mr. Tomaszewski displays either a failing memory or a selective memory.

Since September 2004, this is at least the 12th letter from Mr. Tomaszewski spouting liberal talking points, with most bashing Republicans and/or President Bush.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The Republican Party has used negative campaigning and character assassination with success in the 2000 and 2004 elections.”

[RWC] I’m sorry to say all political parties have their share of bad actors.  The idea that Republicans are the only guys with bad behavior is hysterical.

Negative campaigning and character assassination are not synonymous.

Note, there’s nothing wrong with negative campaigning as long as the allegations are true.  That said, telling people why they should vote against your opponent only goes so far unless you can tell people why they should vote for you.

“Candidate George W. Bush, in the South Carolina 2000 Republican primary presidential election, accused U.S. Sen. John McCain while he was prisoner of war in the Vietnam War of dealing with the Communist [sic].”

[RWC] Candidate Bush made no such accusation.  Did some moronic Bush supporter make that claim?  Who knows?  Since 2000, the published myths of what transpired in South Carolina have grown astronomically.  Democrats have accused President Bush of doing just about everything except killing McCain’s dog.

“In the 2004 presidential election, Republicans belittled U.S. Sen. Kerry’s Purple Heart medals earned in the Vietnam War.”

[RWC] Actually, men who served with Kerry questioned his Purple Hearts.  Indeed, some of Kerry’s own comments called into question at least one of those medals.

What did President Bush say about John Kerry?  In an August 2004 interview on NBC, President Bush said, “I think his [John Kerry] going to Vietnam was more heroic than my flying fighter jets.  I mean he was in harm’s way.  I wasn’t.  On the other hand, I served my country.  Had my unit been called up, I would have gone.”  Boy, that’s character assassination at its finest!  It was pretty gracious when you remember Kerry – and his wife – likened Bush’s National Guard service to running away to Canada.  In fact, you won’t find anywhere an example of either President Bush or VP Cheney saying anything but positive statements about Kerry’s military service.

“Bush, on the other hand, escaped serving in the Vietnam War by using his father’s influence in getting into the Texas National Guard.”

[RWC] This is a hoot!  Here’s a guy claiming Republicans specialize in character assassination, and then he attempts to use character assassination himself!  What’s really telling is Mr. Tomaszewski believes flying fighter jets in the National Guard is “escaping” something.

Oh, and what about Dan Rather and his CBS accomplices?  I guess attempting to use forged documents to question President Bush’s Guard service wasn’t an attempt at character assassination.

“The Republicans won’t change.  Republicans will continue to use negative campaigning and character assassination in the coming elections.”

[RWC] Earlier this year one local Democrat accused another of trying to bribe him to stay out of the primaries.

Did Mr. Tomaszewski miss the local billboards put up by Democrats that showed State Rep. Biancucci (D-15) with a pig snout?

In Maryland, Democrat operatives were caught fraudulently acquiring the credit report of a Republican opponent.

During a nationally televised debate in 2004, VP candidate John Edwards tried to embarrass VP Cheney by bringing up the sexual orientation of Mr. Cheney’s daughter.  It’s telling that an “inclusive” liberal felt someone’s homosexuality was something negative to exploit.

Yeah, those Democrats are little angels. <g>
