Go after illegal aliens; Michael Torbic; Beaver County Times; May 8, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“This administration is doing nothing to protect our southern and northern borders from terrorists, aliens and drug runners.  It is time for our voters and people to take action for their own safety.”

[RWC] While it’s incorrect to claim “this administration is doing nothing to protect our southern and northern borders,” it’s true we’re not doing a thorough job.

If you’ve followed Mr. Torbic’s letters, you know he’s a dyed-in-the-wool liberal.  I mention that fact because I get a chuckle when I hear a liberal complain about illegal immigration.  For years it has been liberals who fought all attempts to protect our borders.  Indeed, there’s a growing number of liberal-run cities that set themselves up as “sanctuaries” by instructing their police officers not to arrest illegal aliens solely for illegal immigration.  Liberals were also the folks who told us we needed to provide social benefits to illegal aliens, providing an even greater incentive for illegal immigration.  Some liberals even proposed allowing illegal aliens to vote!

In general, liberals believe in controlling illegal immigration no more than they believe in limited government.  Why?  Liberals believe illegal aliens will eventually find a way to vote and will vote for the liberals who enabled their illegal activity.

Liberals see that President Bush is letting conservatives down on this topic and see it solely as a political means to weaken support for President Bush.  If President Bush jumped hard on illegal immigration, I can just about guarantee the liberal now crying for improved border control would suddenly find a reason to oppose it.

“The governors of each state should enlist 150 unemployed citizens, male and female, ages 21-50, to be trained by their state police on how to handle arms and self-protection.

“The trainees would have all the equipment to perform their duties.

“They would be paid a salary and have life and health insurance while on duty.  They could serve as long as they want to or until the federal government takes charge.

“The money to finance the program will come from corporate donations, taxes on legal gambling, state lotteries and tobacco and alcohol sales.  Hopefully, there will be contributions from citizens.

“As of now, we are policing the world with our military in nations that can afford to take care of their borders.”

[RWC] Other than perhaps South Korea, which nations would those be?

“We are leaving our borders exposed to terrorists, drug dealers and aliens.  This is costing our citizens a vast sum of money to take care of their health and other problems.

“Each natural-born and naturalized citizen should be supplied with an identification card like the Social Security card that show their birth date and place of birth.  This way, the aliens could be tracked when they apply for employment or have trouble with the law.”

[RWC] Mr. Torbic needs to keep up with current events.  The most recent federal spending bill included a provision that driver license applicants have to prove their citizenship and states had to verify the documents.  For non-citizens, they would need to provide a valid visa and the license would expire on the same date as the visa.

“The governors would appoint a panel from various states and have control of the operations until and when the federal government takes control.”

[RWC] Given the recommendations, this letter has to be a joke.
