Their sins are real; Nicholas J. Vaccarelli; Beaver County Times; September 28, 2007.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“This is in response to Dan Reeping’s letter ‘The sins of the fathers’ on Sunday.

“He must have been living under a rock for most of his Catholic life.  He makes it appear as if the attorneys are waiting to shake down the Catholic Church for money and the poor defenseless priests don’t have the courage to stand up against them, so they give in and pay.

“He also mentioned that Mr. Rogers is of the same mold as the bishops.  I personally never met Mr. Rogers, but those who I have spoken to who have say he may have had more faith in his little pinky than some of our priests and bishops.

“Reeping’s letter makes it seem like he wants to give a pass to the deceased priests who were involved in these crimes because they cannot defend themselves.  According to the way he put it, they have gone on to their heavenly reward.

“I personally hope they are burning in hell for what they did.  They stole many a person’s identity and the Catholic Church should pay billions because it attracted these types of individuals over the years.

“In many parishes, the financial matters have been taken over by the faithful.

“This is not where this problem started.

“It started with a simple idea that forced people into a box of remaining celibate and trying to lead a flock of people who weren’t.

“It continued by permitting a lifestyle of when things were found out, the only action taken was to transfer the priest to another parish to continue his behavior and start all over again.

“What we are experiencing is probably only the tip of the iceberg.  History has proved that not all those called to religious life can be trusted.”

[RWC] It’s clear from this and two previous letters (here and here) that Mr. Vaccarelli has serious problems with his alleged religion.  I wrote “alleged religion” because he’s beginning to sound like one of those writers who claims to be a “lifelong Democrat or Republican” yet is really the exact opposite.
