Don’t buy the double-talk; Bill White; Beaver County Times; October 7, 2004.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“With flip-flop accusations flying left and right, Vice President Dick Cheney’s own must be in serious question.  The following is from a speech given about Desert Storm.

“‘I would guess, if we would have gone into Iraq, we would still have forces in Baghdad today.  We would be running the country.  We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home.  The question in my mind is, how many additional American casualties is Saddam Hussein worth?  The answer is not very damn many.  We’re not going to get bogged in the problem to take over and govern Iraq.’”

[RWC] Mr. White didn’t tell us Mr. Cheney made this comment in 1992, only about a year after Desert Storm.  At that point in time, we likely expected sanctions would eliminate Hussein.  As we know, Hussein managed to take personal advantage of the sanctions.  After 10+ years, things changed quite a bit.

“Then why has he now turned 180 degrees on the Iraqi question, with our country bogged down with no exit plan?”

[RWC] The exit plan is victory.  What would Mr. White consider a plan?

“Has not this puppeteer and spinmeister extraordinaire given the American people a dose of double-talk?

[RWC] Ah, name-calling.  This a sure sign of a solid argument – not.

“Can’t Cheney even remember his lines?”

[RWC] Mr. White sure is hard up for material.  It’s important to note that “flip-flopping” is not simply changing your mind occasionally.  Any reasonable person changes his mind from time to time as the situation changes.  A flip-flopper is a person who can rarely make up his mind on any issue and stick with it.
