War diverts resources; Witty Young; Beaver County Times; September 14, 2005.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The letter writer to The Times last week, whose opinion was that our nation is world class three, was entirely correct.  It’s too bad more of us can’t see the forest for the trees, as the letter writer claims for the president’s administration.  The letter showed his foreign and domestic policies as well have our nation on a slippery slope and heading into bankruptcy.”

[RWC] If Ms. Young believes the U.S. is a third-world country, she doesn’t understand the meaning of the term.

“I agree the administration is raiding our national treasury to finance the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq for rebuilding purposes, which are diminishing our supplies of oil and doing nothing for those nations’ unemployed residents.”

[RWC] There is no “treasury.”  Ms. Young talks about “diminishing our supplies of oil,” yet I suspect I know where she stands on domestic exploration and the building of additional domestic refining capacity.

“If our nation’s newspaper editors were only stampeded with more of letter writers like the one recently to The Times, perhaps it wouldn’t be too late to regain the respect we once had in our world.”

[RWC] Does Ms. Young not read the op-ed pages?  The op-ed pages – particularly in the Times – are already inundated with letters, columns, and editorials expressing opinions like those of Ms. Young.

“Respect we once had in the world?”  Ms. Young is regurgitating a worn-out anti-Bush talking point.  In Ms. Young’s world, apparently you gain respect by allowing terrorists to kill your citizens without consequences.
