Carl Davidson (KD): “THOUGHT FOR THE EVENING: A guy gets up at a Trump rally tonight in New Hampshire, during Q&A, and says ‘We have a problem in this country: Muslims,’ and goes on to say Obama is one, that He’s not American, the Muslim have US-based training camps to kill us, and how are we going to get rid of them? Trump panders and goes along with it. I’m sure you’ll see the clip a dozen times.
“(No surprise to me. I think Trump’s a fascist, and this is a case in point.)
“But here’s a thought. MSNBC is in an uproar about it, because Obama isn’t a Muslim. It’s the old birther nonsense. Then they show an old McCain clip, where McCain challenged a supporter who said Obama was an Arab, and McCain came back with ‘No, he’s a decent family man...’
“Arabs aren’t decent family people?
“So what if Obama were a Muslim? There are millions of American Muslims. And the Constitution is explicit about requiring no religious test for the office.
“Or think of it this way. If the guy said ‘We have a problem in this country: Jews. And Obama is a Jew...How do we get rid of them?’
“Would the proper response be, ‘No, that’s a lie. He’s not a Jew?’
“This is why the progressive camp needs to include those made of sterner stuff, at least among its core organizers, than media liberals and those who don’t think too deeply about these things.”
In case you missed it, KD is unhappy Mr. Trump didn’t become a fact-checker and defend President Obama. Given his history, the last thing KD wants to do is introduce fact-checking in the political process.
Here’s what the guy at the Trump town hall said according to CNN: “We have a problem in this country. It’s called Muslims. We know our current president is one. You know he’s not even an American. Birth certificate man. But, anyway, we have training camps growing where they want to kill us. That’s my question: When can we get rid of them?” I read that to mean “When can we get rid of the alleged training camps?” KD likely read it to mean “When can we get rid of Muslims?” because he’d have a hard time justifying opposition to getting rid of alleged terrorist training camps.
KD likes to refer to Mr. Trump as a fascist, but fascism is on the left of the mythical center, just like KD.
Democrats like to forget Democrats opposed to Mr. Obama started the whole birther BS during the 2008 primary campaign. The “Obama is a Muslim” stuff goes back at least as far as his 2004 Senate campaign.
Readers will not be surprised KD did not provide Mr. McCain’s full slap-down of two of his supporters. Here’s the McCain story according to CNN:
“At a rally in Minnesota on Friday, a woman told McCain: ‘I don’t trust Obama. I have read about him and he’s an Arab.’
“McCain shook his head and said, ‘No ma’am, no ma’am. He’s a decent family man...[a] citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues. That’s what this campaign is all about.’
“One man at the rally said he was ‘scared of an Obama presidency.’ McCain later told the man he should not fear Obama.
“‘I want to be president of the United States, and I don’t want Obama to be,’ he said. ‘But I have to tell you, I have to tell you, he is a decent person, and a person that you do not have to be scared as President of the United States.’”
I won’t hold my breath waiting for KD and his fellow travelers to defend their opponents as Mr. McCain defended Mr. Obama.
