As in my critique earlier this year of “Good advice,” I actually agree the terrorists should not be killed, but only because they want to become martyrs and their deaths would elevate them in the eyes of followers.  Whatever punishment would make them appear to be embarrassments in the eyes of current and potential followers is definitely the way to go.  Otherwise, I’d like to see them dead.

The Times, however, was not exactly forthright when it said we “must be careful not to make martyrs of the five men who are charged with coordinating the [9/11] attacks.”  The editorial neglected to remind us Times editorials oppose capital punishment regardless of the circumstances, period.  The Times was nice enough to give me an example just three days after publishing this editorial.
