On Sunday the Times went back 37 years to compare Rep. Wilson to “Hanoi Jane” Fonda, a traitorous leftist.  Today, the Times went back 153 years to compare Mr. Wilson to a violent Democrat (Rep. Preston Brooks) guilty of assaulting Sen. Sumner.  Mr. Sumner changed to the Republican Party from the Free Soil Party, but I don’t know if it was before or after the attack.  Oh, did you notice the editorial failed to mention the political parties of Messrs. Brooks and Sumner?

Other than being absurd comparisons, what’s the common theme?  The Times apparently felt it had no choice but to use leftists/Democrats for its historical examples of bad behavior.  Wouldn’t the Times have used Republicans if it could in order to drive home its apparent “point” Republicans are ill-behaved?  If the Times was going to use leftists/Democrats anyway, what I don’t get is why the Times went back so far.  Over the last few days I’ve seen video clips of Democrats on the floors of the House/Senate calling then-President George W. Bush a liar.  Weren’t those more comparable acts and far more recent?
