BCT Editorial – 10/23/09

Waking up; Editorial; Beaver County Times; October 23, 2009.

This editorial is simply another from the Times telling the GOP what it needs to do to be successful.  A previous example is “Winner’s circle.”  As I’ve written before, exactly why should Republicans take seriously advice from a proven political enemy?

A routine tactic is to cite Rockefeller Republicans and praise them.  One example was Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).  Every time Mr. McCain stuck his thumb in the eyes of conservatives and even then-President George W. Bush (a fellow Rockefeller Republican) or “reached across the aisle” to sponsor legislation with the likes of the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), the press approvingly referred to Mr. McCain as a “maverick” and an example of what it would take for the Republican Party to win.  The press, including the Times, maintained this position until Mr. McCain actually won the Republican nomination for President in 2008.  As most of us knew would happen, the press turned on Mr. McCain and he was immediately portrayed not as a “maverick” but as a partisan Republican.  What we got in Mr. McCain was a candidate conservatives weren’t excited about and for whom independents and so-called “conservative” Democrats would not vote.  After all, why vote for Democrat lite when you can vote for the real thing?
