The editorial wants us to believe the Times really cares about openness in the Obama administration. In reality I believe it’s what I call a throwaway criticism of President Obama. The purpose? To provide the Times with a criticism to point to when it’s accused of unwavering support for Mr. Obama’s leftist policies. “Paltry” was a previous example. Even so, the editorial couldn’t help but throw Mr. Obama a bone when it said the Obama administration “has been more transparent in some areas” without providing any examples.
