BCT Editorial – 12/15/09

No appeal; Editorial; Beaver County Times; December 15, 2009.

If you think this editorial supports letting the free market “decide how many liquor licenses the South Side - or any other city neighborhood, for that matter - can accommodate,” you’ve been fooled.  The clues are the “let the market and the state decide” and the apparent support for vesting control in the PLCB.  When the government can decide how many licenses can be issued and where, it’s not a free market.

We’ve seen this same attempt at verbal “trickeration” by the Times regarding healthcare.  Though just about every healthcare-related editorial since at least 2005 would lead most readers to conclude the Times supports a government-run healthcare monopoly (“Drama queens” is the latest example.), the Times insists in private communications it has “consistently supported a market-based approach to health-care reform going back to the Clinton era.”
