Together with today’s “Quick hits,” all we have are more Times editorials opposing K-12 education alternatives to the traditional one-size-fits-all, brick-and-mortar public school system.  According to my records, the most recent previous editorial on this topic was less than a month ago in “Quick hits” of January 23, 2011.

This editorial cites a teacher’s “blog posting in which she called her students ‘disengaged, lazy whiners’ and complained that they are ‘just generally annoying’ and ‘disobedient, disrespectful oafs.’”  While the editorial concedes the teacher’s action “might be seen as unprofessional” (might!?), at no point does the editorial question the accuracy of the teacher’s posting or present corroborating evidence.  Instead, it appears the editorial simply uses the teacher’s alleged assessment of her students to support a position the Times has taken over the years.  Is the teacher’s assessment correct?  I don’t know, but I wouldn’t use someone’s online rant to support my position without corroborating info from a credible source.

Finally, consider the Times publishes editorials and columns telling us we can’t trust what we read on the Internet.  So what does the Times do?  It uses a teacher’s online posting as evidence its position is correct.  This couldn’t be hypocrisy, could it?
