Tend to your own family; Rocco Bianco; Beaver County Times; October 17, 2006.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“This letter is for all the people who are concerned about Terri Schiavo.

“Everybody, get off the podium.  Leave the family alone.”

[RWC] What Mr. Bianco really wanted to write was, “Everybody, get off the podium, except for me.”

“I don’t understand why everybody in the country had to put in their 2 cents worth.  She belonged to the Schiavo family, not the country’s.  The decision belonged only to the Schiavo family, not state officials, friends or somebody from Beaver County.”

[RWC] Mr. Bianco says Ms. Schiavo “belonged to the Schiavo family.”  What about the Schindler family, her natural family?  According to Mr. Bianco, Ms. Schiavo’s parents and siblings had no role.  As a reminder, it was the Schindler family that sought help from government officials.

“God is in each and every one of us.  When her husband made the decision, it was made with the guidance of God.”

[RWC] Mr. Bianco ignores the husband’s apparent conflict of interest.  In 1997, Michael Schiavo announced his engagement to his girlfriend even though he was still married to Terri.  His girlfriend became his common-law wife and they started a family together.  At the time of Terri Schiavo’s death, Michael Schiavo had at least two children with his common-law wife

“I don’t understand why everybody is so upset about this.  Would you like me or a state official making a decision about your family problems?  Fumbling for words, are you?  Again, get off the podium and worry about your family.”

[RWC] Again, Mr. Bianco ignores the fact Ms. Schiavo’s natural family asked for help.

Let’s also not forget how this thread started.  Larry Gillespie wrote a letter bashing Sen. Santorum for responding to the Schindler family requests for help.
