Betty Ann Bowser – 8/24/12

What’s going on?; Betty Ann Bowser; Beaver County Times; August 24, 2012.  At the time of this writing, this letter appeared only in the print edition of the BCT.  I apologize for any transcription errors.

Previous letters from Ms. Bowser I know about were “Why is Pennsylvania not thrilled with Obama?”, “A lot to answer for,” “Are Tea Partiers malcontents?”, and “‘Would Jesus be a Republican?’.”  I did not critique the last letter because it was a collection of unconnected sentences.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“What makes a Republican tick anyway?  They use the religious right for their dirty work.  Christians do not even realize they are being used.”

[RWC] This letter is similar to previous Bowser letters in that it’s mostly a litany of unconnected sentences.

What “dirty work?”  I suspect “dirty work” refers to any policy/program Ms. Bowser opposes.

“And we are introduced to Sarah Palin by John McCain.  How about the Tea Party and their extensions?  Health reform is finally a reality, and the very people benefiting from it are trying to repeal it.  Does that make any sense?

[RWC] Ms. Bowser mentions Sarah Palin, John McCain, and “the Tea Party and their extensions” but doesn’t say anything about them.

Obamacare is not “health reform.”  Even if it could work (Facts, history, and logic show it can’t.), Obamacare is about consolidating more power in the federal government at the expense of our individual liberty.  Most Americans recognize this.  According to a June 2012 poll conducted by The New York Times and CBS News, 68% wanted Obamacare overturned in its entirety and/or the individual mandate overturned.  Only 24% wanted Obamacare kept in its entirety.

“The U.S. Supreme Court justices are supposed to be neutral; however, they seem to vote in line with the party that put them in.

“Webster says, ‘Politicians can be artful or dishonest.’  Do you think Chief Justice Robert’s [sic] decision was artful?  I think so.  God is in control.”

[RWC] In one paragraph Ms. Bowser writes “[Supreme Court justices] seem to vote in line with the party that put them in,” then in the next paragraph mentions Chief Justice John Roberts (nominated by President George W. Bush) who upheld Obamacare.  Given her letter-writing body of work, I suspect Ms. Bowser only has a problem with justices “vot[ing] in line with the party that put them in” when the nominating president is a Republican.

If Chief Justice Roberts and/or one or more of the other justices who upheld Obamacare had ruled the other way, would that have meant God is not in control?
