Voter ID law too restrictive; Michael Connifey; Beaver County Times; August 22, 2012.

Mr. Connifey’s most recent previous letter was entitled “Voter ID law blatant attempt to win votes.”  A previous letter is here.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“State Republican legislatures across the country have enacted voter ID laws whose sole purpose is to defeat President Obama in the upcoming presidential election.  Republican leaders have admitted as much.”

[RWC] This letter is a recitation of Democrat talking points.

“The Pennsylvania voter ID law is one of the most restrictive laws enacted, disenfranchising almost 10 percent of Pennsylvania voters, almost all of whom are Democrats.”

[RWC] Sure.

Mr. Connifey apparently flip-flopped.  In his previous letter on this topic, Mr. Connifey wrote, “The new voter ID law is a blatant attempt by the Republicans to win votes in the presidential election.”  Now Mr. Connifey tells us the law is about “disenfranchising almost 10 percent of Pennsylvania voters, almost all of whom are Democrats.”  Which is it, winning more votes for Republicans or disenfranchising Democrats?

“Republicans in Ohio arranged to make it easier for Republicans to vote than Democrats before a public outcry forced Republicans to make their restrictions the same for all.”

[RWC] Liar, liar, pants on fire!  The law to which Mr. Connifey apparently refers gives military personnel an extra three days to cast their votes in person.  The “public outcry” was a lawsuit by the Democrat National Committee.  The law remains in effect as of this writing.  As a reminder, in 2000 the Gore campaign attempted to invalidate military absentee ballots in Florida.

“Republican leadership should be deeply ashamed.  It is truly un-American to make it harder for one party to vote than the other.  If you win, win because you have the better candidate and not because of un-democratic voting laws.

“Republican legislators who have voted against these restrictive laws are to be admired for their bravery.  All the others should be voted out of office ASAP.”

[RWC] Leftist darling former-President Jimmy Carter supports a photo ID for voting.

Last summer, Rhode Island passed a law requiring a photo ID to vote.  RI voters reliably vote Democrat and Democrats hold overwhelming majorities in both houses of the General Assembly.  The governor is an independent, a former U.S. Senate RINO with high ADA Liberal Quotients.
