Stay away from another Cold War; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; March 24, 2014.  Though my friends have fun at my expense by referring to him as my “Cousin Lonzie,” I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Most of Mr. Cox’s at least 90 letters since 2004 are tinged with race, and all take leftist positions.  The most recent previous Cox letter I critiqued was “Altmire could have served a lot longer.”  You can find more Cox letters in the archives (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004).

When it comes to race issues, Mr. Cox is pretty tolerant if you share his leftist ideology.  For example, Mr. Cox had no problem with the late-Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), a former KKK officer, but referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as an “Uncle Tom.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“‘Ronald Reagan done drove America crazy.’ -- Rev. Jesse Jackson as presidential candidate, 1984.”

[RWC] As I noted in a previous critique, a few minutes of Google searches found no reference to the alleged quote or anything close.

“Jackson voiced this opinion after noticing that even with Reagan gutting the steel industry and other manufacturing he was likely to be re-elected that year.  He was, and the destruction of American society continued.  Jesse Jackson was just the first to recognize that form of American mindlessness.  Reagan is destroying the nation and he’s re-elected?  That’s crazy.”

[RWC] Mr. Cox has been pushing his fantasy about President Reagan and the steel industry since at least 2004.

“So now Russia has occupied Crimea/Ukraine.  Coincidentally, I’ve been thinking that a new Cold War would give our craziest right wing Republicans (John McCain and Lindsey Graham) a reason to return to some kind of America First mindset where they would join with President Obama to save us from something or other.”

[RWC] The playbook never changes.  You may recall lefties opined President George W. Bush planned to nuke Iran.  In any case, Mr. Cox seems to forget Messrs. Graham and McCain don’t have any power to do anything but President Obama does.

“But since the Russians invaded Crimea, right wing Republicans have enthusiastically embraced Putin and spoken of Obama with contempt.  Who does McCain think will fight this new Cold War?  Not me.  I’ve been there and done that.”

[RWC] Gee, nothing like Mr. Cox and his fellow travelers did – and still do – to President George W. Bush, right? <g>  That said, I haven’t heard any Americans, “right wing” or otherwise, “embrace” Mr. Putin.  “Embrace” and “condemn” must be synonyms in Mr. Cox’s thesaurus.

“Hardly anyone speaks of what it was like to really be in the Cold War.  Ask some Cold Warriors about some of the holes they served in like Shemya, Adak, Eilsen AFB, Thule Greenland, Goose Bay Labrador and Wheelus AFB in Libya.

“In many of these places no shots were fired but the misery of the Cold War was real and profound.  I wouldn’t want to do that again.  Plus no one can guarantee a Cold War won’t get hot.  McCain should know that at this stage of his life.”

[RWC] Again, Mr. McCain doesn’t have any power to do anything but President Obama does.
