Lonzie Cox, Jr. – 3/2/14

Altmire could have served a lot longer; Lonzie Cox, Jr.; Beaver County Times; March 2, 2014.  Though my friends have fun at my expense by referring to him as my “Cousin Lonzie,” I am not related to Mr. Cox.

Most of Mr. Cox’s at least 89 letters since 2004 are tinged with race, and all take leftist positions.  The most recent previous Cox letter I critiqued was “Think ahead.”  You can find more Cox letters in the archives (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004).

When it comes to race issues, Mr. Cox is pretty tolerant if you share his leftist ideology.  For example, Mr. Cox had no problem with the late-Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV), a former KKK officer, but referred to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as an “Uncle Tom.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In my opinion, Jason Altmire could have been our congressman for as long as he wanted. Before him we thought we were stuck with Melissa Hart, an Iraq war supporter and right winger.

“The Times sites [sic] a recent book’s theory that Altmire’s political demise was the result of a revenge vendetta by Bill and Hillary Clinton.  I regarded Jason as a friend, not just a congressman, and I worked with him on his campaigns.

“I feel that Altmire lost his seat in two stages.  Stage one was when he went all gun happy as a high-profile member of the NRA.  Many locals felt that the NRA was the reason for the out of control use of guns in school shootings, etc.

“Stage two was when Mr. Altmire voted against the Affordable Care Act (Obama Care), in 2010.  That got him the handle of being a ‘Blue Dog’ anti Obama Democrat among the leaders and rank and file of the labor movement of our region.

“When I told Jason that he shrugged it off.  Clinton’s endorsement of Mark Critz didn’t mean anything to me.  The Republican gerrymandered redistricting may have meant something but the big damage was already done.  Now we’re stuck with what’s his name [U.S. Rep. Keith Rothfus (R-PA12)].”

[RWC] Other than the Clinton aspect, Mr. Cox covered this ground in “Altmire might lose his Democratic base” (2010).  My comments are in that critique.  As I noted in that critique, “Mr. Altmire knows while his district is mostly Democrat, most of those rank-and-file Democrat voters are nowhere near as far to the left as Mr. Cox and his pals at Beaver County Reds.”
