Rita Gavert – 7/6/16

Republican candidates going back on promises; Rita Gavert; Beaver County Times; July 6, 2016.

The BCT published at least 50 letters from Ms. Gavert since mid-2005.  The only previous Gavert letters I reviewed were “Romney not Bush” and “Why did we lend Brazil $3 billion?”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“As a Republican, right now I am really angry at some of my fellow party members.  In particular, John Kasich and some of the other nominees who promised to support anyone who won the race.  Now he is refusing to support Donald Trump, so evidently promises mean nothing.”

[RWC] Yes, this review a tad late.  Other than this mea culpa, I finished the review 11 days before the Republican National Convention but forgot to post it.  Sorry.

I wonder if Donald Trump (DT) was Ms. Gavert’s first choice.

Ms. Gavert and others appear to have selective memory.  As the other candidates, DT signed a pledge to support the eventual Republican nominee.  It’s stupid to make such a pledge because you don’t know who the eventual nominee will be, but they all jumped off the bridge.  During the CNN town hall of 3/29/16, Anderson Cooper asked DT, “Do you continue to pledge [to support] whoever the Republican nominee is?”  DT replied “No, I don’t anymore.”

Even DT suffers this malady.  During a 6/30/16 pep rally three months after he said he would no longer honor the pledge, DT said,

“But I signed a pledge.  I would have honored that pledge.  I wouldn’t have gone crazy, I wouldn’t have had, you know, let’s yell it from the loudest building, but you know what, I would have honored the pledge.  But we have people that have not honored the pledge.  And that’s a terrible thing.  I don’t care who you are, what your position.  You can say what you want.  They all signed so that I’d sign because I was the one that was negotiating a little bit.  I’ll always negotiate for you people.  I love to negotiate.  Just remember this: They signed a pledge saying they will abide, saying they will back the candidate of the party.  And now they sit back and the pledge is out there and the press doesn’t even go after him on that.  They broke their word, in my opinion.  They should never be allowed to run for public office again because what they did is disgraceful.”

“At risk is the entire Supreme Court and all future judge nominations.  If Hillary Clinton wins, we have someone who 70 percent of the people think is dishonest and untrustworthy in charge of turning an entire country into a totally liberal state.”

[RWC] I agree with Ms. Gavert, but who’s to say DT’s nominations will be any different?  DT was a registered Republican from 1987 to 1999.  Since 1999, however, DT’s been an Independence Partier (Oct 1999 – Aug 2001), no party affiliation (Dec 2011 – April 2012), a Republican (six years, Sep 2009 – Dec 2011, Apr 2012 to present), and a Democrat (eight years, Aug 2001 – Sep 2009).

“Republicans, wake up and don’t let some of the goofy things you don’t like about Trump allow our country to suffer.”

[RWC] There’s a lot of non-goofy things to dislike about DT.  Here’s what I wrote about Donald Trump (DT) earlier this year.  DT has done nothing to change my opinion of his suitability.  That’s also true for Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
