Release Mumia from death row; Rebecca Gimeno; Beaver County Times; January 8, 2007.

At the time I wrote this critique, Ms. Gimeno’s letter was in the print edition of the Times but not on the website.

In her first letter, Ms. Gimeno told us how wonderful Beaver County Peace Links is.  In her second letter, Ms. Gimeno lobbied to “Legalize cannabis.”

Because I’m too lazy to transcribe the entire letter, I’ll stick to a few comments.

In my critique of Ms. Gimeno’s first letter, I mentioned the Marxist (the group’s own description) Workers World Party.  Almost as if on cue, Ms. Gimeno starts this letter off with “Workers World Party has tried fervently to make Mumia Abu-Jamal a common household name for quite a few years now.”  You see, Ms. Gimeno wants Abu-Jamal taken off Pennsylvania’s “death row.”

As a reminder, Abu-Jamal (née Wesley Cook) was convicted in 1982 for the 1981 murder of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner during a traffic stop.

Ms. Gimeno believes Abu-Jamal is a political prisoner and cites “the support of Paul Newman, the European Parliament, Maya Angelou, Alice Walker, Amnesty International and many other exceptional names.”

Here’s tip for Ms. Gimeno.  If you expect anyone to take you seriously, don’t lobby for convicted cop killers and don’t cite support from groups like WWP, Amnesty International, the European Parliament, et cetera.
