Liberals damaging America; Paul Kahr; Beaver County Times; September 10, 2007.

Mr. Kahr has a history of anti-liberal rants.  A previous rant was entitled “Judges, liberals are traitors.”  This letter is no better.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“The Democratic Party has handed truckers in the Beaver Valley and across the nation a raw deal by allowing Mexican trucks and drivers to carry freight into this country without having background checks done on the drivers and no safety inspections done on the trucks.”

[RWC] I don’t believe the assertions about background checks and safety inspections are correct, though I can’t say that with certainty.  Unfortunately, just about all the websites I’ve seen discussing this are full of emotional rhetoric.  There’s no question drivers should be adequately vetted and trucks should at least meet U.S. safety requirements.

“Meanwhile, American drivers and trucking companies must toe the line.

“Something is very wrong with this picture.  If I were a trucker and working to support my family and myself, I would be hoping [sic] mad.

“You can thank NAFTA for this one.  Remember that NAFTA was passed in 1994 by the Clinton administration.”

[RWC] If Mr. Kahr weren’t so blinded by partisanship, he would know a majority of congressional Republicans voted for NAFTA while a majority of Democrats voted against it.

“These drivers from Mexico most likely work for some drug lord or maybe even one of these terrorist countries, and you know something good will not come out of this mess.

“I think that liberals lay awake at night thinking of something they can do to damage this country more.  What is wrong with these people?  You figure it out.  I have given up trying.  God help us.”

[RWC] Mr. Kahr could have written a well-considered letter criticizing NAFTA and some of its provisions, but instead he took the road well traveled by most of his opposition; that is, ranting and name-calling.
