Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.
“Regarding Paul Dici’s recent letter to The Times that President Obama is incapable of telling the truth, while President George W. Bush always told the truth and was a stand-up guy.
“I know of one big lie President G.W. Bush did tell: Iraq has weapons of mass destruction.
“How many thousands of people died because of that lie?”
[RWC] Be cautious when you read something that says someone lied. It is all too common for people to treat lying and being wrong as synonymous when it comes to political discourse. President Bush didn’t lie about WMD in Iraq. Every “post mortem” performed on the Iraq WMD issue made the following conclusions. First, no one in the Bush administration exerted pressure on the intelligence services to come up with a pre-determined assessment. Second, the Bush administration – and Congress – did not misrepresent the information provided to it by U.S. and foreign intelligence services. That is, the Bush administration – as well as Congress – acted in good faith with the information they had. Remember, the existence of WMD in Iraq was a unanimous conclusion of the United Nations Security Council. The Clinton administration made the same assessment.
Regarding Benghazi, it was wrong to claim the attack was a peaceful demonstration gone awry during the early hours of the attack. Before the attack was over, however, that story became a lie when everyone in a position to know came to learn the attack it was a well-planned terrorist attack, likely by an al-Qaeda affiliate.
