Swann just a wannabe; Matthew P. Maljevec; Beaver County Times; August 18, 2006.

Since September 2006, Mr. Maljevec treated us with two letters (here and here) entitled “Impeach Bush”, merely bashed President Bush in a third letter, and in a fourth letter Mr. Maljevec asserted, “Rendell is one of the best governors Pennsylvania has ever had.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Republican gubernatorial candidate Lynn Swann made a dumb move.  This tells you something about this ex-football player and his decision to have loser Bush speak at a fund-raiser.”

[RWC] “Loser Bush?”  Whether you like President Bush or not, he’s not a loser.  After all, he beat the Democrats’ best twice to be governor of Texas and twice to be President of the United States.

I sense Mr. Maljevec didn’t use “ex-football player” in a positive way.  What’s wrong with an ex-football player running for office?  After all, we allow career politicians and lawyers to run for office <g>, and I’d be willing to bet successful football players like Mr. Swann contributed more to the local economy than his opponent.

“Who in his right mind would want Bush to endorse his political ambitions?

“With decisions like this being made by Swann, I sure do not want him to be my governor here in Pennsylvania.  No way.

“Swann has but one goal, and that is to be governor.  If he makes it (I doubt it), all the promises he has made will mean nothing.  I can tell by his attitude that if he makes it, it will be terrible for the people of this state.

“An incident happened not long ago between Swann and a young boy who wanted an autograph from Swann.  Swann in no roundabout way told this young man that he did not have time for such trivial matters.  Can you imagine how the young man felt being rejected by his idol?”

[RWC] I don’t know if Mr. Maljevec’s alleged incident happened or not.  I used Google and Yahoo in an effort to find mention of it and received no relevant hits.  That said, I got bunches of hits for articles mentioning the large number of autographs Mr. Swann was signing.

Note how Mr. Maljevec’s autograph seeker grew from a “young boy” to a “young man” within a sentence.

If there was an incident in which Mr. Swann didn’t sign an autograph, I’d be willing to bet there’s more to it than Mr. Maljevec told us.

“Again, I say to voters, Swann is for himself and nobody else.  If elected, he will treat the people of this state as he did with the young man wanting his autograph.  I urge you to vote no for this wannabe.”

[RWC] Mr. Maljevec needs a civics update.  You can’t vote “no” for a gubernatorial candidate.  You can only vote for a candidate or choose not to cast a vote for the office.

Finally, if you believe any of the above had any bearing on Mr. Maljevec’s lack of support for Mr. Swann, you are kidding yourself.  All it took was an “R” after Mr. Swann’s name.  Why can’t folks like Mr. Maljevec be honest with us?
