David V. Matthews – 10/15/06

Rib-tickling letter - not; David V. Matthews; Beaver County Times; October 15, 2006.

For background, in previous letters Mr. Matthews told us there’s no liberal media bias, President Bush committed treason, he’s positive creation played no role in our evolution, President Bush plans to nuke Iran this year, “Centrism is Bushism,”, and the Bush administration may be “conducting warrantless surveillance upon” us.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

In his letter on Tuesday, Dan Reeping blames the sex scandal involving Rep. Mark Foley, a gay Republican, on the Democrats and other Americans who ‘have embraced gays and their lifestyles.’”

[RWC] I don’t know if Mr. Foley is a merry Republican, but he is a homosexual Republican.  FYI, this is the second letter in a row in which Mr. Matthews has gone after a letter from Mr. Reeping.

“Reeping, to his credit, makes his point through witty wordplay.

“For instance, to depict the Democrats as weak and unmanly, he asks this: ‘Queer, isn’t it, that the Democrats are demanding freedom of scrutiny for terrorists in our military prisons?’

“‘Queer’  Get it?  Ha, ha!  Only queers hate scrutinizing - i.e., torturing - terrorists.”

[RWC] I’m not sure if this letter tells us more about Mr. Matthews than Mr. Reeping.  Perhaps I’m naïve, but I didn’t pick up on the alleged double entendres Mr. Matthews spied.  Then again, I don’t refer to homosexuals using pejoratives like queer, fruit, et cetera; I was taught better.

If Mr. Reeping did as Mr. Matthews alleges, shame on Mr. Reeping.  In either case, we know more about Mr. Matthews than we did before this letter.

I really have to give Mr. Matthews credit for his ability to spot double entendres.  I would never have recognized “scrutiny” was a code word for “torture.”  Given my naïveté, I thought Mr. Reeping was referring to spying on terrorists so we could capture or kill them and foil their plots.

“He also notes that the Democrats and the ACLU have become ‘bedfellows.’”

[RWC] I hope Mr. Matthews isn’t trying to tell us Democrat leadership, Democrat activists, and the ACLU aren’t fellow travelers.

“‘Bedfellows.’  Get it?  Ha, ha, ha!

“And what does Reeping conclude?  ‘Sadly, Foley and many others want to harvest the fruits of their (the pro-gay crowd’s) labors.’

“‘Fruits.’  Get it?  Ha, ha, ha, ha!”

[RWC] I read the entire letter and didn’t find where “Dan Reeping blames the sex scandal involving Rep. Mark Foley, a gay Republican, on the Democrats and other Americans who ‘have embraced gays and their lifestyles.’”
