Insurance helps us with the inevitable; Mike McGee; Beaver County Times; January 24, 2010.

Mr. McGee’s letters tend to lean to the left.  Examples are here and here.  You’ll note Mr. McGee wrote a letter complaining about the economy when it was good and a Republican was President, but has remained silent now that it’s bad and a Democrat is President.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In response to Wednesday’s letter to the editor by Danny Sainovich (‘What loons we have for leaders’):

“First of all, he obviously does not understand how insurance works.  Everyone puts their money into a common pool and benefits are paid out accordingly.”

[RWC] Mr. McGee apparently read a lot into the Sainovich letter, all 59 words.  Indeed, Mr. McGee’s own understanding of “how insurance works” appears suspect.

“I’m happy that he has lived a healthy lifestyle for 20 years and has never been in the hospital.”

[RWC] Though he may have been, Mr. McGee never said he was writing about himself.

“But suppose he’s involved in some kind of accident.  Healthy living isn’t going to help in that situation.

“There are also diseases and syndromes you can catch where the causes are unknown.

“In summary, healthy people need to contribute to the insurance pool because eventually they will need the benefits themselves because aging is a fact and you are one unforeseen event from requiring the services of a hospital and those insurance benefits.”

[RWC] Of course, the key point of Mr. Sainovich’s letter was being forced to purchase a government-defined medical insurance policy under penalty of law.  Leave it to a lefty like Mr. McGee to omit that point.

I may feel a person is nuts not to purchase catastrophic medical insurance, but I’ll defend his right to risk bankruptcy.
