Name-calling is never acceptable; Emily Moran; Beaver County Times; April 28, 2010.

A previous letter from Ms. Moran supported a ban on smoking on private property.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“In response to Sunday’s front page article ‘Angry Americans shout names:’”

[RWC] I didn’t see this article and it’s not on the Times website.

“In the first paragraph, the president of the United States was called insane, stupid, dumb, foolish and even evil.

“Oh, my!

“As far back as I can remember, my mother taught me that calling people names was ugly.  I never allowed my own children to call names.  As a teacher of elementary children for 16 years, any name-calling was swiftly dealt with.

“You can disagree with a person.  You don’t even have to like the person.  But name-calling is, as my mother said, ‘an ugly thing.’

“I also taught that every human deserves respect, but there are certain positions that command respect by the office rather than the person.  The president of the United States most certainly is one of them, along with people of the clergy, law enforcement, our elders and, of course, teachers.”

[RWC] Going back to at least 2004, it appears Ms. Moran didn’t condemn the name-calling when George W. Bush was President, at least not in a letter to the editor.
