Could it be …; Angie O’Dell; Beaver County Times; September 26, 2007.

In her previous letters, Ms. O’Dell accused the Bush administration of “leaking” classified information to discredit Joe Wilson, told us the recent drop of energy prices was the result of a conspiracy, and in another merely listed Democrat/liberal talking points.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Could it be that in 2007 there is still a place in America where there is a ‘whites only’ tree - a tree in a school yard under which black students are not allowed to sit?”

[RWC] At an assembly, a black student asked if a particular tree was “whites only.”  The principal immediately replied “no.”

“Some say the story of the tree was stretched.  However, administrators quickly had that tree cut down as it became the focal point of a national story.”

[RWC] Ms. O’Dell’s definition of “quickly” differs a bit from mine.  The tree was cut down about a year after the original incident.

“Could it be there is a place in America where black students are taunted with a hanging noose?”

[RWC] The principal immediately expelled the white students, but then changed to suspending the students when overruled by the school board.  The boys were not charged with a crime because no law covered their despicable action.

“I guess it could be - in a place called Jena, La. - and maybe in other places as well.”

[RWC] For some reason, Ms. O’Dell failed to mention the actions of the so-called “Jena Six.”  Six black boys jumped and beat a single white boy until he was unconscious.

“After the shame of Katrina, why are we surprised?”

[RWC] What do these events have to do with each other?

“How sad and tragic for those students, how sad and tragic for our soldiers, many of them black, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan to spread freedom and democracy, and how sad and tragic for America.

“How could we let this be?”

[RWC] As usual, Ms. O’Dell didn’t let facts get in her way.
