Opportunities taken away; Milton L. Richeal; Beaver County Times; September 9, 2012.  At the time of this writing, this letter appeared only in the print edition of the BCT.  I apologize for any transcription errors.

A previous Richeal letter was “‘Save education funding for all kids’.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Gov. Corbett pledged not to raise taxes during his campaign.  His supporters will say he has kept that promise, but has he?

“To keep his promise, Corbett started his first state budget with extreme cuts to education funds both on the collegiate and scholastic level.  Is it a coincidence that almost every school district in Beaver County has been forced to either raise or consider raising school taxes?  The answer from the governor’s office would no doubt be ‘I didn’t raise their taxes.’”

[RWC] If true, what’s new?  School districts routinely increase tax rates.

“Some schools have been forced to cut sports, band and other activities.  Staff cuts.  Layoffs.  Early retirements of teachers.  All of this affects the kids in our state.  They are the ones not getting the most of their education thanks to this governor.  How many kids will be shut out from a college education?  Don’t forget, the education cuts have forced our state universities to raise tuition more than usual.”

[RWC] For most of my comments, please read my critique of “Corbett’s priorities make no sense” (Don Skinner, 3/13/11).

The last I checked, the budget for fiscal year 2012/2013 increased education spending by $183 million (1.8%).

“Hold your head high, Gov. Corbett.  You kept your campaign promise.  It’s just a shame many of today’s youth will never have the opportunities you did because you took it away from them.”

[RWC] Blah, blah, blah.
