U.S. must change ways - and fast; Lois Sestito; Beaver County Times; September 14, 2010.

Previous letters from Ms. Sestito were entitled “Smokers violate others’ air,” “Address our real problems,” and “Bring U.S. troops home this year.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“It seems to me that our me-first policies are hurting all of us.

“I’d like to see some changes and a lot more bipartisanship.  We need to start buying American (if available) and being more responsible.

“Congress needs to outlaw the outsourcing of American jobs, NAFTA needs to be reconsidered, and our present immigration laws enforced diligently.”

[RWC] I think Ms. Sestito means offshoring, not outsourcing.  Outsourcing is when a business contracts with another business to perform some functions.  For example, a business may contract with a janitorial business for cleaning services instead of doing the cleaning with its own employees.

Businesses make the decisions they need to in order to survive and succeed.  Otherwise, they close up shop and/or go into bankruptcy.  Would Ms. Sestito prefer businesses continue to operate in the U.S. until they go bust?  Protectionism doesn’t work.

“Our government can’t and shouldn’t provide every service imaginable.

“We’re already in debt up to our eyebrows, and borrowing more should not be done.

“We need to stop ‘gifting’ other nations with cash as a goodwill gesture.  We don’t have the money, and if you read newspapers and news magazines, you know we are not respected.

“In the last 10 years, the politicians have abandoned common sense and no longer care about anything but their wishes and political party.

“Wake up, guys.  The party’s over.”
