John M. Tomaszewski – 10/3/08

We can’t repeat last eight years; John M. Tomaszewski; Beaver County Times; October 3, 2008.

Since September 2004, this is at least the 43rd letter from Mr. Tomaszewski with all but a handful spouting leftist talking points, with most bashing Republicans and/or President Bush.  Prior to this letter, his most recent expressed fear of John McCain’s VP running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“If you don’t want to vote for Barack Obama for president for whatever reason, think of the alternative.

“Let us review and not forget the last eight years of the Republican presidency: Using fear tactics for political gain; the terrible and unnecessary war in Iraq; the failure to curb al-Qaeda in Afghanistan; decline of American prestige abroad; the loss of jobs; cutting taxes for the first time in time of war, with the tax cuts benefiting the upper incomes; and the failure to see the fall of several financial institutions.”

[RWC] Wow, what a list of talking points!  Let’s look at them.

“Using fear tactics for political gain?”  What were the “fear tactics” and what was the “political gain?”

“The terrible and unnecessary war in Iraq?”  Mr. Tomaszewski seems to forget that all Democrat candidates for President who were in the Senate at the time also voted for the war.  This includes current Democrat VP candidate Joe Biden.

“The failure to curb al-Qaeda in Afghanistan?”  Al-Qaeda has been curbed, just not eliminated.  That can’t happen as long as al-Qaeda and the Taliban can find safe haven across the border in Pakistan.

“Decline of American prestige abroad?”  That’s BS.  Our real friends are still our friends and who cares about the rest?  Does Mr. Tomaszewski really care what countries like Iran, Syria, Cuba, Venezuela, et cetera think of us?

“The loss of jobs?”  More people are employed now than when President Bush took office.

“Cutting taxes for the first time in time of war, with the tax cuts benefiting the upper incomes?”  I never quite understood what war had to do with whether cutting taxes made sense.  Waging a war requires a strong economy.  Mr. Tomaszewski likely blotted out of his memory that President Bush inherited a recession.  A time-proven means to help recovery from a recession is to cut taxes.  As for the “tax cuts benefiting the upper incomes,” Mr. Tomaszewski ignores the fact EVERYONE received tax rate cuts.  He also ignores the fact “upper incomes” pay a greater portion of income taxes now than before the rate cuts.

“The failure to see the fall of several financial institutions?”  Rather than repeat myself, please see my critique of “Democrats can’t do worse than GOP.”

“Do we want another four years of Republicans leading us in the same course?”

[RWC] Hmm, what has the Democrat-majority Congress done for us during the last two year?

“Vote for Obama.”

[RWC] Did you note Mr. Tomaszewski only told us why not to vote against Republicans, not why to vote for Mr. Obama?  So far, Obama letter writers are batting 1.000 in this category.
