Gilda De Ferrari – 3/20/07

Let the majority be heard; Gilda De Ferrari; Beaver County Times; March 20, 2007.

This is at least the fourth letter from Ms. De Ferrari on this subject since June 2004.  The previous letters were “Vote Bush out of office,” “Stop the carnage,” and “Stop the killing.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire, D-4, has been receiving mail from people who want him to send more troops to Iraq and to vote for more funds for the war.

“He has to hear from the majority of us who want this war to end.  Not only is this war killing the youngest and the most able among us; it is alienating us from the rest of the world, it is weakening our military, it is creating huge deficits, it is pouring billions of dollars into new weapons (including nuclear).”

[RWC] I know this will come as a shock to Ms. De Ferrari, but everyone wants the war to end.  The difference is, I believe it must end with our victory; folks like Ms. De Ferrari don’t care if we win or lose.  Indeed, I suspect folks like Ms. De Ferrari would prefer a loss for political reasons.

The rest of the paragraph is just talking points.

“This is a shameful waste of resources that should be spent on needs here at home.  How safe are our bridges, our food supply, our homes, our children, our poor, our elderly, our returning veterans?  Let Altmire hear from us to stop this war, to rescind the shameful tax cut for the billionaires and to use the money for domestic needs.”

[RWC] Note Ms. De Ferrari’s real agenda.  She doesn’t want the people who earn their income to keep it.  Indeed, Ms. De Ferrari wants to take even more and spend it on her pet projects.

Regarding spending for “our returning veterans,” I don’t believe Ms. De Ferrari cares at all.  Why?  In “Stop the killing”, Ms. De Ferrari accused our armed forces of “crimes against humanity.”

Regarding “the shameful tax cut for the billionaires,” Ms. De Ferrari chooses to ignore the fact that everyone received a tax rate cut and that high-income earners actually pay a greater percentage of taxes than they did before the cuts.  Quoting the Tax Foundation, “Despite the charges of critics that the tax cuts enacted in 2001, 2003 and 2004 favored the ‘rich,’ these cuts actually reduced the tax burden of low- and middle-income taxpayers and shifted the tax burden onto wealthier taxpayers.”  The TF further stated, “7.8 million low and middle-income families had their entire income tax liabilities erased by the cuts.”
