Secret ballot offers union goons’ tactics; Paul Dici; Beaver County Times; December 26, 2008.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“One of the benchmarks of a democracy is the secret ballot.

“The ill-conceived Employee Free Choice Act would destroy that concept.  It would permit union goons to bully workers to vote for unions or join Jimmy Hoffa.”

[RWC] Mr. Dici shot his credibility when he immediately got into name-calling (“goons”).  Given to going over the top, Mr. Dici used the term “goons” three times in this letter.

This is the third time I’ve taken Mr. Dici to task for employing letter-writing tactics usually associated with misguided leftists.  Among his previous similar exercises are “Democrats hate democracy” and “Clinton ‘stole’ gas tax.”

Here’s a reminder to conservative writers.  99.9% of the time the facts and truth are on your side.  When you get into name-calling and rants, you’re displaying laziness and killing your credibility.  Leftists generally have no choice but to employ these tactics because the facts don’t support their positions 99.9% of the time.  You have a choice.

“Unions are bankrupting every industry/business they rule and every large city in the blue states.

“We call this area the Rust Belt because of the insatiable demands of unions.  Auto workers and steel workers are doing just fine in the South.  (Many Ellwood City residents may remember when union violence drove Matthews Conveyer to Kentucky.)

“Union goons get their shorts in a knot because Wal-Mart workers vote overwhelming against unionization, yet not one example of voter intimidation has been recorded against management.

“The schools in our large cities are in chaos and are run by two unions, the National Education Association or the American Federation of Teachers.  You have no choice.  If you want to teach, you must join the union.  If you refuse, the union takes the dues out of your paycheck anyway.

“We have one large factory in Ellwood City that is expanding and flourishing.  It is non-union and the workers I speak with are very happy that they are working there.

“I realize that union goons won’t understand this, but most people in this country foster the concept of democracy, i.e., the secret ballot.”

[RWC] The sad part is Mr. Dici could have written a well-considered letter on this topic but instead he took the road well traveled by most of his opposition; that is, ranting and name-calling.
