McCain letter was on the mark; Lynn Coleman Gardner; Beaver County Times; September 3, 2008.

Previous letters from Ms. Gardner are here, here, and here.  Ms. Gardner first expressed her support for Barack Obama in “Let the truth prevail.”

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“Lonzie Cox Jr.’s letter published Aug. 27 (‘McCain blathers about race’) was absolutely right on.”

[RWC] Given Ms. Gardner’s letter history, who’s surprised this would be her opinion?

“It’s an ongoing sickness and ignorance when people of color to this day have to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are just as capable and just as good as any other race and can accomplish just as much, if not more.”

[RWC] You’ll note we didn’t see a similar letter from Ms. Gardner when Lynn Swann ran for PA governor in 2006.

“Barack Obama is the evidence, as well as his choice of vice president, Sen. Joe Biden.”

[RWC] When did Joe Biden become a “person of color?”

“I’m personally sick of McCain repeating that when he was in the service he spent five-and-a-half years in a hole, but he can’t remember how many houses he has now.  The average family struggles to keep one.”

[RWC] A lot of folks on the left don’t like hearing about Mr. McCain’s service.  That’s strange given they didn’t seem to mind constantly telling us in 2004 that John Kerry served several months in Vietnam.

“People of color have had to make far greater strides getting out of holes to get ahead in this world today.”

[RWC] Yeah, life was tough for Mr. Obama.  His grandmother (who raised him) was a bank VP and he attended private grade and high schools, Columbia University, and Harvard Law School.
