John A. Lovra – 9/1/08

Vote for change with Obama; John A. Lovra; Beaver County Times; September 1, 2008.

If we can use 2004 as a guide, we can expect a flurry of pre-election letters from Mr. Lovra.  From September 30 through October 11, 2004, Mr. Lovra treated us to six anti-Bush letters (here, here, here, here, here, and here).  In none of those letters did Mr. Lovra tell us why to vote for Mr. Kerry.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Even though the primaries have been over for awhile, many Hillary Clinton supporters are still mad that she is not the chosen candidate.

“A recent poll showed that 30 percent of Hillary backers will choose to vote for John McCain rather than Obama.

“I have a few questions for these people.

“Are you happy with high unemployment and massive home foreclosures?”

[RWC] When did 5.7% become “high unemployment?”  During the 1996 campaign when Bill Clinton was the incumbent, CNN referred to 5.6% as “already-low.”  Let’s also remember the minimum wage (a Democrat initiative) increased 25% (from $5.25 to $6.55/hr) since May 2007.  Mix an artificial 25% wage increase with a slow economy and you get a jump in unemployment at the low end of the pay scale because businesses don’t want to add/keep employees at inflated wages.

What did President Bush have to do with “massive home foreclosures?”  Lenders and borrowers entered into ill-advised mortgages.

“Are you happy with our health care system?”

[RWC] Does this mean Mr. Lovra supports a government-run, taxpayer-funded healthcare monopoly?  You can find more info on this here.

“Do you like gas prices over $4 per gallon?”

[RWC] Other than probably not being forceful enough about pushing for more domestic oil and gas production, what did President Bush do to cause high fuel prices?

“Are you in agreement with our policies in Iraq and Afghanistan?”

[RWC] Yes, I believe we should be successful and not cut and run.  I know folks like Mr. Lovra hate to admit it, but we’re being successful in Iraq.  Simply running away would be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

“If you answered yes to these questions, go ahead and vote for John McCain, and you will get what you asked for: four more years of Bush policies.”

[RWC] Vote for Mr. Obama and you’re voting for the second Jimmy Carter administration.  You know, gas lines, stagflation, et cetera.

Did you note Mr. Lovra didn’t detail the “Bush policies” he apparently doesn’t like?

As for the “McCain = Bush” stuff, that’s BS.  Since Messrs. Bush and McCain are both Republicans, shouldn’t they share a lot of similar positions?  Don’t Messrs. Obama and Biden share a lot of similar positions?  If they didn’t share a lot of similar positions they wouldn’t belong in the same party.  Despite the fact I disagreed with President Bush on several issues, I believe he did an OK job.  President Bush definitely did a better job than would have Al Gore and John Kerry.

“Otherwise, get over it.  Stop the sour grapes, and vote for a change with Obama.”

[RWC] Did you notice Mr. Lovra didn’t tell us how Mr. Obama would address Mr. Lovra’s issues?  As we have so far from all Obama supporters, all we got was the nebulous “change.”  In some cases this is because the Obama supporter doesn’t know the details.  For those who do know the details, most of them would prefer the rest of us not know.
