Jewel Robertson – 11/9/08

Letters were off base on Obama; Jewel Robertson; Beaver County Times; November 9, 2008.

Until January 2007, Ms. Robertson’s letters focused on bashing President Bush.  In her first letter, Ms. Robertson opined that President Bush could be listening to Satan.  That tells us much of what we need to know about Ms. Robertson.  Since January 2007, race has been a regular feature of her letters.

Ms. Robertson wrote three previous letters (“Don’t distort Obama’s record,” “Give change a chance,” and “Race has no place in election”) supporting Mr. Obama.  I found the title of the last letter a tad hypocritical since in “Give change a chance” Ms. Robertson wrote, “Don’t you feel it is time for an African American [for President]?”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I [sic] saddened me to read that the writer of Thursday’s letter to the editor ‘Great loss for ‘sweet land of liberty’’ feels that electing Barack Obama as president was a great loss for this country.

“In my many years of being an American, where all of my ancestors were born, nine generations or more of them, I now feel a part of the country I was born in.  The founding fathers did not fight to keep blacks out of America.  In fact, they brought them into the country to build it.”

[RWC] Despite the fact Ms. Robertson was born here as were at least nine generations of her family, you’ll find she still refers to herself as an “African American.”  Though my ancestors apparently came here after Ms. Robertson’s, I consider myself just an American.

“The writer of ‘Democratic voters did nation an injustice’ called Democrats ignorant for electing Obama.  Some Republicans and independents voted for him, too.”

[RWC] Some Democrats voted for Mr. McCain.  Regardless of who’s running, there are always party members who vote for the other party’s candidate.

“We have all suffered for eight years under the leadership of George Bush.  Obama’s years in the White House will be better than Bush’s.  Nothing can be worse.  That was one reason no one wanted another Republican in the White House.  So was a failing economy.”

[RWC] “No one wanted another Republican in the White House?”  The last I checked, 46% (about 57.4 million) of us voted for the Republican, John McCain.

“It is hard for non-blacks to understand what is happening because they have always had their freedom.  No one had to pass a law to give them their rights.”

[RWC] Perhaps Ms. Robertson should take a history review.  Democrat tools like the poll tax affected far more than just black Americans.  Let’s also not forget women – of all colors – didn’t gain the right to vote until 1920 (19th Amendment).

“This is a new day, and Obama will be, as he said, ‘the President of the United States of America.’

“I now I believe that our father in heaven will grant him the wisdom and understanding to lead the country in a way that will be pleasing to him.”

[RWC] This is a somewhat different sentiment than Ms. Robertson expressed after President Bush’s 2004 re-election.  In that letter, Ms. Robertson opined, “It could be Satan [President Bush] is hearing from because Satan is the prince of this world.  More than likely that is who it is he is hearing from.”
