Alex Yawor – 1/2/11

‘Notch victims’ will never get money; Alex Yawor; Beaver County Times; January 2, 2011.

Some of Mr. Yawor’s previous letters attempted to bash then-President Bush regarding Iraq and Iran, and then-VP Cheney regarding his hunting accident.  In a July 2006 letter, Mr. Yawor implied if you supported our action in Iraq, you were “eager to send our young to die in Iraq.”  Two of Mr. Yawor’s letters tried to elevate Jimmy Carter (here and here).  Mr. Yawor has been a busy writer lately; this is at least the 11th letter from him since 1/3/10.  The last Yawor letter I critiqued was entitled “Republicans ignore Bush’s presidency.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“This is a letter for all the seniors who are called ‘notch victims’ and are sending money to an organization that claims it is going to get $5,000 for us.”

[RWC] “[A]n organization … claim[ed] it … [was] going to get $5,000 for [the Yawors]” and alarm bells didn’t go off in Mr. Yawor’s head?

A few years ago some guy in the YMCA locker room was on a rant blaming several then-serving Republicans for the “notch,” none of whom had anything to do with it.  When I checked it out, I found the situation is not what these folks claim.  The Social Security Administration has a fact sheet about this.  It’s too bad Mr. Yawor didn’t do his due diligence before sending his money to the scammers.

“Fifteen years ago, my wife and I started to send money to this organization and are still waiting for the $5,000.  Every time we got a letter from the organization, it was always the same thing - asking for money and that we will get ours next year.  We stopped giving, and you and I are still waiting for ours.”

[RWC] I hope Mr. Yawor didn’t also fall for the Nigerian scam.  Nearly six years ago Mr. Yawor wrote “‘Notch Victims’ needs ignored” (2/9/05) but didn’t mention he was taken in by the scam and sending money to someone.  I didn’t critique that letter and it’s no longer on the Times website.

“A week ago, I went to Google on my computer and typed in ‘What is a Notch Victim.’  Different things came up, including one called ‘The myth of the notch.’  The article was written by Stephen Nohlgren and after reading it, I really believe that we will never see the money.”

[RWC] The article to which Mr. Yawor refers dates back to 2004.  Again, it’s too bad Mr. Yawor didn’t do his due diligence 15 years ago instead of waiting until “a week ago.”

“There is not enough space to tell you about the article, so to learn about the reasons why we will not get anything, you will have to look it up.  If you don’t have a computer, ask a relative or friend to do it.

“People in Washington are waiting for us all to die, which is happening by the thousands every day.”

[RWC] Even after doing some research Mr. Yawor still doesn’t seem to understand he’s been scammed and isn’t owed anything more than what he is receiving.
