Congress ready to take down the country; James V. Zedak; Beaver County Times; September 26, 2013.

Mr. Zedak has written at least 36 letters since 2004.  I critiqued eight of those letters (here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here).

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Americans have seen a measure by the House to defund the National Healthcare Act that will die in the Senate, and this raises the distinct possibility of a government shutdown as we reach the end of the fiscal year and a hot and bloody budget battle followed by another one later on when the debt ceiling is debated.”

[RWC] “National Healthcare Act” is Mr. Zedak’s made-up name for the misnamed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare.

FYI, the concept of the “government shutdown” is a myth.  All of the important stuff keeps chugging along.  That there is the possibility of a shutdown is one of the reasons conservatives favor limited government.  That is, if the government does not have its tentacles in every aspect of our lives, a shutdown would have little effect.

“What our politicians don’t seem to realize is that the economy has been slow to recover as incomes for the low and middle classes stagnate while those in the upper-income brackets have seen their incomes rise.  A government shutdown at this point in time can possibly result in our country falling back into another and possibly deeper recession.”

[RWC] I’m confused.  Didn’t the Obama administration declare the summer of 2010 to be “Recovery Summer?”

As for “our politicians don’t seem to realize is that the economy has been slow to recover,” that’s BS.  Democrat politicians know the truth but tell us otherwise unless a political situation requires something closer to the truth.  When Republicans mention the state of the economy, folks like Mr. Zedak jump all over them.

You may recall Mr. Zedak predicted gloom and doom because of the sequester in “People should be priority.”

“A group of dedicated politicians have tried over 40 times to repeal the National Healthcare Act or Obamacare, as some so contemptibly call it, and each time has failed.  Now they seem ready to take down our country in order to get their way.  What has happened to common sense and a need to work together to revitalize this country with a little give and take on both sides of the aisle?”

[RWC] President Obama himself refers to Obamacare as Obamacare.  That said, Obamacare is contemptible.

“Now they seem ready to take down our country in order to get their way?”  “They” are Senate Democrats and Mr. Obama who choose not to defund Obamacare.  It is completely within in the power of Democrats to avoid a mythical “government shutdown.”  Mr. Zedak should call Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Mr. Obama and tell them not to shut down the government.

“Common sense and a need to work together to revitalize this country with a little give and take on both sides of the aisle?”  Is Mr. Zedak serious?  When Democrats controlled both houses of Congress and Republicans were powerless to stop anything, Democrats shoved Obamacare down our throats without a single Republican vote.  I found no letter from Mr. Zedak at that time asking for “a little give and take on both sides of the aisle.”
