William G. Horter – 10/3/08

What a difference eight years makes; William G. Horter; Beaver County Times; October 3, 2008.

When Mr. Horter isn’t bashing Republicans in general, and President Bush specifically, he tries to push a taxpayer-funded, government-run healthcare system (some examples are here, here, and here) on U.S. citizens.

Mr. Horter used to be one of our local Republican impersonators (The group also includes Messrs. William A. Alexander, Arthur Brown, Edward “Fellow Republicans” Hum, and George Reese.) who write claiming to be disgruntled Republicans.  In June 2008 Mr. Horter wrote, “So after 50 years of being a Republican, I have changed my party.  I am now a Democrat.”

History also shows you need to do your own due diligence regarding the “facts” Mr. Horter presents in his letters and the comments he posts on the Times website.  Here’s just one example.

Along with other letter writers I’ve mentioned, I wish Mr. Horter could get a regular column in the Times.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“I’m wondering if everyone is struck by the difference in the ending of this presidency as opposed to the last one of Bill Clinton.

“Clinton ended his eight years with a balanced budget, and a world with no shooting wars for this country.”

[RWC] I wonder what Mr. Horter considers a “shooting war.”  Here is a list of attacks against the U.S. between the 1993 WTC bombing in which six people died and 9/11/2001: 1993: U.S. peacekeepers in Somalia - 18 dead soldiers; 1996: bombing of Khobar Towers military barracks in Saudi Arabia - 19 dead servicemen; 1998: U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania bombed - 224 dead African civilians; 2000: USS Cole bombed - 17 dead sailors.

“I also remember how the Republicans crowed in 2000 that now the adults had arrived.

“As I write this, those adults are talking abut a trillion dollar bailout for Wall Street to add to the new debt they had already added with their incompetence, and perhaps another war with Iran this time, on top of the two wars we are in.

“Yes, I said a trillion dollar bailout because we all know that with the interest on this new debt the cost will be more than a trillion.”

[RWC] Mr. Horter and his fellow travelers are desperate to lay the blame for this on Republicans, but fortunately the tracks are well documented.  Rather than repeat myself, please see my critique of “Democrats can’t do worse than GOP.”

“To those so-called adults who perpetrated this fiasco upon us, I say this: Take your trickle-down tax cuts, your free-market deregulations back into your cave where they belong.  Take your torture, your Guantanamo Gulag, wire taps on the American people and the outright stripping of any constitutional law with you.”

[RWC] What is it with lefties listing talking points without providing factual support?  This paragraph is simply a mindless rant so forgive me for not wasting my time on it.  Besides, I’ve covered this BS numerous times before.

“Why Barack Obama isn’t 30 points ahead is beyond my comprehension.”

[RWC] What isn’t?  Yes, that was a cheap shot and beneath me.
