William A. Alexander – 2/22/08

Can’t wait for Hart to lose; William A. Alexander; Beaver County Times; February 22, 2008.

Mr. Alexander has written at least 27 letters (See the archives for more examples.) since December 2004, and all but two (one fawning over Rep. Jason Altmire [D-PA] and another critical of local funding for JROTC) bashed Republicans for something.  Despite this record, Mr. Alexander is a Democrat/liberal who wants us to believe he’s really a Republican.  You’ll read what I mean below.

Below is a detailed critique of the letter.

“When Melissa Hart was our congressperson, I sent her letters on various subjects presenting my request for the rationale for her vote on an upcoming bill.”

[RWC] Given his letters to the editor, I can imagine what Mr. Alexander’s letters to Ms. Hart were like.

“I only got a few answers, and they were always form letters thanking me for my support of her position and vote when my letter was for the other side.”

[RWC] This sentence is probably true.  I have the same experience with all elected politicians.

“The only real answer I ever got was her letter to the editor rebutting one of my letters to the editor against her, and it did not respond to the specific facts in my letter.  I thought the least she could do was have two form letters.”

[RWC] Here is Mr. Alexander’s letter.  Below is the letter to the editor from Ms. Hart that Mr. Alexander didn’t like.

“In response to the assertions last week of letter writer William Alexander of Harmony Township that I support HR 25, the Fair Tax Act.

“While he is correct that the proposed legislation would eliminate the federal income tax and institute a 23 percent national sales tax, I clearly state in the letter that ‘I have not taken a formal position’ on the fair tax and will weigh all of our options as the Congress continues the debate on tax reform.

“I want to take this opportunity to assure readers that I stand firm in my belief that the federal tax system needs reforming.  Americans are overtaxed, not only in the amount they pay, but also in the amount of time they are asked to spend complying with the tax code.

“As the Congress considers reform, the most important factor to me is the best interest of our community.  To be effective, comprehensive tax reform must benefit every American who pays taxes.

“As we move forward with reform, making the code fundamentally fair, more understandable and less burdensome are my priorities.  I encourage everyone to contact my office to let me know how they think tax reform should be implemented.”

“It seems she feels if you aren’t with her, you are against her.  Wasn’t her job to represent all the voters in her district, or at least make a pretense of doing so?”

[RWC] “It seems she feels if you aren’t with her, you are against her.”  Please read Mr. Alexander’s letters.  Here’s a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

“My wife tells people one of the happiest times she has ever seen me was when the Beaver County votes were announced in the last election showing that Hart had lost.  Then, on camera, she denied it and inferred [sic] the reporter didn’t know what he was talking about.”

[RWC] How sad for Mr. Alexander.  Mr. Alexander’s life is such that a politician’s loss is a high point for him.

FYI, leading up to the 2006 election, Mr. Alexander didn’t write one letter telling us why we should have voted for Ms. Hart’s Democrat opponent, Jason Altmire.  In fact, the only time Mr. Alexander mentioned Mr. Altmire before the election was to tell us it didn’t matter that Mr. Altmire was a lobbyist, all the while telling us it was bad for Republicans to associate with lobbyists.

Finally, who is “she” in the second sentence, Mrs. Alexander or Ms. Hart?

“Being a registered Republican, I got Hart’s form letter/rant announcing her intention to run.  I imagine she will get enough signatures on her petitions north and east of here to run.  Her letter is the usual scare/wedge argument on why she should be elected again.”

[RWC] Regarding Mr. Alexander’s “registered Republican” claim, read my note at the top of this critique.  Why do folks like Mr. Alexander and Ed “Fellow Republicans” Hum think we’re stupid enough to believe they’re real Republicans, whether they’re registered Republicans or not?

“I read in the paper she was going door to door in Beaver getting signatures.  I just wish she had come to my door in Harmony Township.  That would have made my day.

“Maybe I will have another super happy day when Beaver County announces its vote count in November and Hart loses again.”

[RWC] Unless Mr. Altmire shoots himself in the foot, Mr. Alexander will likely get his wish.  The only reason Ms. Hart won when she did was because in her Democrat-majority district, the Democrat candidate (Stevan Drobac, Jr.) was incredibly poor (even the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette “endorsed” Ms. Hart in 2002) and the Democrat party itself didn’t support him.

Finally, fellow travelers Mr. Alexander and Stephen Kislock need to get together.  If you recall, Mr. Kislock wrote, “U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire is a clone of former U.S. Rep. Melissa Hart and he can now claim the title of ‘Loyal Bushie.’”
