Keeping our rich overlords happy; David V. Matthews; Beaver County Times; November 10, 2009.

For background, in previous letters Mr. Matthews told us there’s no liberal media bias, President Bush committed treason, he’s positive creation played no role in our evolution, President Bush plans to nuke Iran this year (2006), “Centrism is Bushism,” the Bush administration may be “conducting warrantless surveillance upon” us, the Bush administration is “warlike and imperialist,” and President Bush “finds the war he started amusing.”  Mr. Matthews also gave us a lesson in creative reading.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Sunday’s editorial (‘Climate control’) argued Pennsylvania could increase its amount of ‘new and expanded business activity’ by acting more like North Carolina.

“Quoting an article in the corporate business magazine Site Selection, the editorial stated that executives liked North Carolina in part due to that state’s ‘non-union environment.’”

[RWC] Yes, along with seven other factors.

FYI, “non-union environment” simply means North Carolina isn’t a closed-shop state like Pennsylvania, meaning labor union management can’t force an employee to join a union as a condition of employment.  There’s nothing to stop employees from forming and joining unions if that’s what they want.

“The editorial didn’t examine how well workers did in such an environment, but who cares, as long as we keep our rich overlords happy?”

[RWC] The editorial didn’t examine any of the factors on an individual basis.  Of course, Mr. Matthews would like us to believe employees who choose to be non-union somehow don’t get a fair shake.  It’s too bad Mr. Matthews didn’t provide data to support his implication.

Employers are “rich overlords?”
