Gov. Brewer should be commended; Oren M. Spiegler; Beaver County Times; February 28, 2014.

Mr. Spiegler is such a prolific letter writer the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review gave him a little tribute back in 2003.  Google “Oren M. Spiegler” and you’ll get more hits than you know what to do with.  Unfortunately, prolific is not a synonym for competent.  Mr. Spiegler claims to be a Republican.  In my critique of “Breathing more freely,” I cited reasons why I was “beginning to believe Mr. Spiegler is simply another Republican impersonator,” but he sealed the deal with “Greatest foreign policy debacle.”  Subsequent letters provided more confirmation.  The group of local Republican impersonators also includes Messrs. William A. Alexander, Arthur Brown, Edward J. Hum, Bill Ralston, and George Reese, all claiming to be disgruntled Republicans.

You can find links to previous critiques of Spiegler letters I critiqued here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.  The most recent critique was of “What about female pope?”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“For whatever the reason or reasons that she did it, I commend Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer for vetoing the mean-spirited legislation which would have enabled merchants and service providers to turn away gay men and women if they could cite a ‘sincerely held’ religious objection.

“This bill should have sent a chill down the spine not only of those who would be directly effected [sic], but of all Americans who believe in equality and fair play.  One need not be an advocate of gay marriage to recognize the danger inherent in a bill would set the stage for the marginalizing of a large segment of our population, men and women who have done nothing wrong.  Had the bill been signed into law, it would not only have hurled a part of our nation back to the ugly pre-civil rights era, but would have had a devastating economic effect on the economy of Arizona and its reputation.

“I hope that the governor acted primarily out of principle and decency, but she has done the right thing and is deserving of commendation for courageously standing up to the forces of ‘holier than thou’ intolerance.”

[RWC] If you ever wondered how folks like Mr. Spiegler can crank out as many letters as he does, it’s for the same reason other activists and politicians can.  These folks simply don’t let facts get in the way.  Here is the official version of SB 1062 vetoed by Gov. Brewer (R).  Here are the House Summary and Senate Fact Sheet sent to Gov. Brewer along with the bill.  If you can find anything about homosexuals in any of these documents, your version of English differs from mine.

While Mr. Spiegler is concerned about “merchants and service providers” turning away customers, what’s he doing about customers ruling out vendors?  That is, what action does Mr. Spiegler propose we take to ensure customers don’t base their purchasing decisions on the ethnicity, sexual preference, skin color, religion, or whatever of “merchants and service providers?”
