Letter fit right into political mainstream; David V. Matthews; Beaver County Times; December 5, 2010. Though the letter appeared on the Times website December 5th, it didn’t appear in the print edition until December 7th.

For background, in previous letters Mr. Matthews told us “It’s marijuana laws that are stupid,” there’s no liberal media bias, President Bush committed treason, he’s positive creation played no role in our evolution, President Bush plans to nuke Iran this year (2006), “Centrism is Bushism,” the Bush administration may be “conducting warrantless surveillance upon” us, the Bush administration is “warlike and imperialist,” and President Bush “finds the war he started amusing.” Mr. Matthews also gave us a lesson in creative reading, refers to employers as “rich overlords,” and told us to “Use taxes to give peace a chance” and “Media are to blame for cluelessness.”

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“O.J. Schlueter’s letter on Tuesday (‘Retaliate against terrorist attacks’) offers advice on how to do just that.

“First, we should return ‘to dust the mosque in Mecca’ to prove we mean business.

“Then, after destroying the holiest site in Islam, we should ‘announce to the Islamic terrorists’ that if they think about attacking us for any reason, ‘another un-predetermined mosque will return to dust,’ and that if they injure or kill just one person, ‘three un-predetermined mosques will return to dust.’

“Only left-wing extremists would find Schlueter’s letter extremist.

“Sure, I guess we would violate a law or two if we intentionally returned civilian sites to dust, terrorist-style, but the past 10 years have shown that the law does not apply to us Americans because we love freedom.

“Schlueter belongs to the political mainstream; he would fit in well in either party.”

[RWC] I’ll go out on a limb and guess this letter was Mr. Matthews’ failed attempt to be clever.
