Lynn Coleman Gardner – 2/8/13

This page was last updated on February 8, 2013.

Use common sense; Lynn Coleman [Gardner]; Beaver County Times; February 8, 2013.  Though the letter was signed “Lynn Coleman,” I’m guessing this is the same author who signed her name “Lynn Coleman Gardner,” also of White Township, to previous letters.  If any readers know differently, please let me know.

Ms. Gardner has written at least 49 letters since 2005.  Previous letters from Ms. Gardner I critiqued are here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.

Below is a detailed critique of the subject letter.

“Assault weapons have no real use other than to assault, kill and maim people.  They have no sports value.  No one is trying to hit a bulls-eye with 50-100 bullets.”

[RWC] “Assault weapon” is a political creation whose definition varies with the person and the firearm the person wants to ban.  In other words, “assault weapon” means whatever the user wants it to mean and covers whatever weapons the user wants it to cover.  Ms. Coleman didn’t provide her definition of “assault weapon.”

I believe Ms. Coleman needs a refresher course on the purpose of the Second Amendment.  Hint: The Second Amendment is not about “sports value,” hunting, and so on.  Please read my critiques of “A shaky ladder” and “Time for talking is over, gun control now” for more info on this topic.

“The president is not trying to take away gun rights of the majority of Americans.  He is trying to make it safer.  If you pass a background check, you can buy as many guns as you can afford.  He is just trying to stop the buying of assault/military-type weapons.”

[RWC] Sure.  This is at least the 11th letter from Ms. Coleman defending Mr. Obama since March 28, 2008.

“The right to bear arms does not mean you can have bazookas, missile launchers and hand grenades.  Use your common sense.”

[RWC] I haven’t heard anyone claim the right to buy “bazookas, missile launchers and hand grenades,” but that could change should the time come when we need to defend ourselves from our government.
